Research

The Schatz Center is dedicated to the development of clean and renewable energy worldwide.

Off-grid energy access (international)

Our off-grid research, product testing, and policy work supports the delivery of clean and reliable energy solutions in areas without a stable electrical grid.

Microgrids (US)

Our renewable energy microgrid projects support rural resilience, Tribal energy sovereignty, and clean energy deployment.

Offshore wind (CA)

We have published over 30 studies on the potential for offshore wind development in California — on topics related to wind farm, port, and transmission developments, as well as workforce and ratepayer impacts.

Land use and emissions

Logging residuals are stacked in a dense pile in a forested area

Our land use and emissions team analyzes the technical and climate dimensions of bioenergy technologies, biochar, carbon removal, waste utilization, and bio-based products.

Transportation

Our efforts in clean transportation date back to the Center’s beginnings in 1989. We are currently engaged with zero-emission vehicle infrastructure planning and electric vehicle-microgrid integration.
